George Carlin was the funniest old rat bastard who ever picked up a microphone. For me, he was a philosopher, a teacher, and a purveyor of social commentary as much as a comedian. He owed as much to Socrates as he did to most stand-up comedians.
Listen to the "Seven Dirty Words" bit, or "How Much is that Dog Crap in the Window?" from Class Clown. Or watch any of the HBO specials he did over the years. Carlin always commented on the culture we held up so high and told us to look deeper. Question the motivations behind what we were doing. And try to do better.
George, I for one will miss you.
UPDATE: Check out the Boing Boing post about George, including a transcript of "Seven Dirty Words."
